What I’ve Been Reading…

Nothing like announcing a change to the format and then disappearing!  10 days later…I’m back.  I guess that’s not that long, but it’s probably one of the longest breaks from writing I’ve done this year.

So what have I been doing? Vacationing!  And what do I do on vacation?  Read!  We took a long weekend to Palm Springs last week (I know, I know – why would I do that, it’s so hot!!…but really it’s not that much hotter than CO and we basically lay around the pool all day and read and take naps…the PERFECT vay-cay).

The first book I read was Bossypants by Tina Fey.

I had just finished the Hunger Games trilogy which as much as I enjoyed them…they were a bit violent and I needed something light to start my vacation with and this was the perfect fit!  If you like 30 Rock and her sketches on SNL…then you’ll jump right into this book.  Easy fun read.

The second book was Untold Story by Monica Ali.

I was really looking forward to this book and it was just ok.  It’s kind of a “what if Princess Diana was alive and well and living in middle America”.  Well in this book, she’s kind of annoying and neurotic.  Maybe she was in real-life.  I preferred my sugar-coated princesses are perfect dreamland.  Eh.

The third book was Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff.

This is a true story of a rescue mission during WWII in what is now Papua New Guinea.  I usually don’t like war books or really even anything in this time period…but it wasn’t your typical war book.  I thought it was absolutely fascinating.  Even though it’s non-fiction, it read like a novel.  Two thumbs up.

Next up: Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer.

Something to do with memory.  I have a horrible memory.  Sometimes it’s embarrassing how much I forget.  Maybe this will help?

As you can see, I have a pretty wide variety in tastes in books.  I’ll read almost anything.  Any suggestions?  I think I’ll need a novel after this one.  🙂



So I was reading The Clothes Make the Girl the other day and she had a post which was part of a series…I don’t think there was a title for it, and I believe she modeled it after someone else…but basically it’s 5 short lists of 5 positive things about yourself.  I thought that sounded like a great way to start off my new year…so here’s my first list!

Five things for which I am grateful:

1. My boyfriend.  This is an easy one for me because I usually do some version of this list every night as I go to sleep.  The list changes every now and then, but my #1 always stays the same.  I’ll try not to get too sappy on ya, so let me just say he is my best friend and partner in crime and I wouldn’t be there person I am today without him.

2. My boyfriend’s kids.  They have opened my eyes to what life as a parent is (thank you Mom & Dad – I had no idea!!)  And even though I am only a part-time insta-mom, it is a blessing to see the world through their eyes.  They make me laugh, they make me think, they make me want to be a better person.

3. Our home.  We live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, but besides the location, we have made our house our home.  I’m not sure I’ve felt that way about any other place I’ve lived.

4. Our lifestyle.  We do not work 9-5 jobs.  We do not get 2 weeks vacation per year.  We do not get holidays off.  And I wouldn’t change a thing.

5. For all the places I’ve been, for all the people I’ve met, and for all the things I’ve done that brought me to where I am today.  That might be a 3-in-1 all-incompassing answer, but it’s true.  I’ve had some pretty amazing opportunities in my life, I’ve traveled around the world, I have friends far and wide, and I’m so grateful for it all!

50th Post, 6 Months, A New Year

So many milestones today!  But the biggest one is the start of another year for me.  My 35th year.

I spent the last 6 months obsessing over my weight, what I ate, and how I prepared my food.  To be honest, that is 6 months too long for any obsession.  Sure I could stand to lose a few lbs.  Yes, I should exercise more.  But writing about my shouldas and couldas isn’t really making me a happier person.

I love writing and felt a little limited by the subject of food alone.  So I’m going to try to write more often and have a different focus.

I’m sure exercise and diet and specifically paleo/primal will still be a topic I write about…I just don’t want it to be the ONLY topic I write about.
